Greetings from a Grasshopper

I meet a grasshopper this week in my garden. Seems to be an end-of-the-summer type of thing. The meeting didn’t last long before he bid me farewell and flew away…kind of like how summer has gone by so quickly. Until next summer…

Eating Like a Bird

Also enjoying the yellow daisies in my garden, like the honey bee, are many beautiful American goldfinches. Here’s one having some lunch.

Firecracker Flower

The orange flowers on my aloe succulent plant are really blooming quickly. Part of the set with the little bloom from last week, is this one, which kind of reminds me of a firecracker. Happy Independence Day!

Summer’s Starting with a Twist

So it’s officially summer now and mine has started off with a twist. Instead of echeveria flowers beginning the blooming race, it’s the the soon-to-be-tall, orange flowers on my other succulent plant that’s off to a great start. I can’t wait to see what other interesting things this summer will bring. Happy summer to all! [...]

I finally got a photo of a new visitor, a friendly and very quick hummingbird who has been visiting me for some time now. What a great way to end off the summer and my photo blog. See you next time!

Perching Sparrow?

I woke up to find two little birds sitting in the tree across from my window. Here’s a close-up of one. I think they are sparrows, but not sure. Regardless, it was great to meet them.

Orange You Glad to Have a Companion?

The other succulent plant’s flowers have arrived and are starting to bloom. They are a beautiful orange/coral color with accents of yellow. A perfect companion to the pink and yellow echeveria flowers.

Blooming Buds

I can’t get enough of the echeveria flowers, which recently started to bloom! They are so vibrant. Looks like the other succulent next to this one also has flowers on the way. Stay tuned.

It’s an Eggplant!

I was starting to give up on our eggplant plant. And then the next time I looked, there it was…a big eggplant! So far it is the only one that was produced this year…ha ha, get it produce-d?…but I am glad that we got at least one. I think I will make it in an [...]

Stealth Dragonfly

Speaking about enjoying our yard (like last week’s bunny), this stealth-looking, red dragonfly was happily flying around for about twenty minutes while I was outside. Awesome, right? It seemed like s/he understood my trying to take a photo and flew really close to me and then around the yard again. So the dragonfly was either [...]

The Baby Bunny’s Back!

Lo and behold, look who came to visit this week…I think it is the baby bunny. Remember this little one from July? I think it’s the same rabbit. S/he sat in the same spot in the yard for about five hours. I am so glad that our yard is worth coming back to.

After Irene

I’m very lucky to report that this was the only damage done during Hurricane Irene. I have to admit that this old lattice was already very brittle and it turned out that the heavy morning glories were stronger that it. My heart goes out to all the people who have suffered due to this storm. [...]

Marigolds and Gladiolus

The orange marigolds are really flourishing while the yellow ones are starting to dwindle. Here’s a set with a pink gladiolus. Those were were planted last year and I only realized that they were perennials when they started spouting this year…and they doubled so each spot had two. I’m obviously new to planting bulbs, but [...]

Rabbit in the Rain

I hadn’t seen any of the rabbits in about a month and then suddenly this one appeared in our yard. Surprisingly, it was while it was raining. S/he sat here for about an hour during heavy rains and eventually morphed into this ball of wet fur. I’m thinking that this must be how a rabbit [...]

The Three Amigos

Three little jalepeño peppers grew in my garden, all arriving at the same time. They look like triplets or at least good friends.

Ripening Grape Tomatoes

The latest in my garden is that the grape tomatoes have turned red and I now have a big bowl of them. They taste great with hummus or as is. I think I might make a Tex-Mex bean salad with corn, black beans, peppers, and halved grape tomatoes. Yum.

Iridescent Insects

I haven’t seen the rabbit family in a couple of weeks, although my neighbor said that she saw one in her yard just the other day. Instead, I found a new set of interesting visitors: two iridescent insects on a plant in the back of our garden. Here’s a close up of one of them. [...]

Baby Bunny on Board

So apparently it is not just one rabbit visiting, but there is a little family with an adorable baby rabbit in the yard. Do you see the baby hiding under the plant there? So cute and they all have white cotton tails!

Caught in the Act

Okay, so here is a picture of the rabbit in my garden. Do you see it there? I think s/he was just passing through since there isn’t anything to eat in that area besides the strawberries in the row in front. I came home and there was a little creature in the garden. I can’t [...]

Well, it is the first official Sunday of Summer and you know what that means: time for my weekly photo blog! This year our garden is off to a great start. As expected, we have tomatoes, garden beans, basil, cilantro, soon-to-be arriving gladiolus, and lots of orange and yellow marigolds. New additions are grape tomatoes, [...]
